Fleas
Tiny jumpers that turn one bite into hundreds.
Identification
Adults are 1/8" long, dark brown, flattened side-to-side, and jump impressively far. Bites cluster around ankles and lower legs.
Behavior & habitat
A single female lays 40–50 eggs per day. Eggs fall off the host into carpet, bedding, and yard soil. Pupae can stay dormant for months and emerge when vibration signals a host.
Health & property risks
Itchy, allergenic bites; can transmit tapeworms to pets and (rarely) typhus to humans. Severe infestations cause anemia in puppies and kittens.
Signs of infestation
- • Pets scratching, biting, or chewing themselves frequently
- • "Flea dirt" (black pepper-like specks) in pet bedding
- • Bites on your ankles after walking through carpet or grass
Prevention tips
- Year-round veterinary flea preventive on pets
- Vacuum carpets, rugs, and pet sleeping areas weekly
- Wash pet bedding hot weekly during outbreaks
- Mow grass and reduce leaf litter where pets rest
