Rodents
Roof rats, Norway rats, and house mice.
Identification
House mice are 2–3" body, gray-brown. Roof rats are slender with long tails and live in attics. Norway rats are stockier with shorter tails and burrow at ground level.
Behavior & habitat
Mice need only a 1/4" gap to enter; rats need 1/2". They breed year-round, contaminate food, gnaw on wires (a major fire hazard), and travel established runways along walls.
Health & property risks
Carry Hantavirus, Salmonella, and Leptospirosis. Chewed wiring causes house fires. Droppings and urine contaminate insulation and stored goods.
Signs of infestation
- • Droppings (small dark capsules) in pantries, cabinets, or attics
- • Gnaw marks on food packaging, baseboards, or wires
- • Scratching or scampering sounds in walls and attic at night
- • Greasy rub marks along walls where rodents repeatedly travel
Prevention tips
- Seal all gaps larger than 1/4" — focus on garage doors, vents, and roof line
- Store food in sealed containers; never leave pet food out overnight
- Trim tree limbs at least 6 ft from the roof (roof rat highways)
- Eliminate exterior clutter, woodpiles, and overgrown landscaping near foundation
How Black Ops treats it
Snap-trap and tamper-resistant exterior bait stations, full attic and crawlspace inspection, and exterior exclusion (sealing entry points) so the population doesn't rebound.
