Ticks
Disease vectors hiding in tall grass and brush.
Identification
Lone star ticks (white dot on female), brown dog ticks, and American dog ticks dominate locally. All have eight legs, flattened oval bodies, and engorge dramatically after feeding.
Behavior & habitat
Ticks "quest" on tall grass and brush, waiting for a host to brush past. They can survive months between meals and prefer humid, shaded environments.
Health & property risks
Vectors for ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, alpha-gal syndrome (red meat allergy from lone star ticks), and rarely Lyme disease.
Signs of infestation
- • Ticks attached to pets, especially around ears, neck, and between toes
- • Ticks crawling on people after time in tall grass or brushy areas
- • Heavy populations in shaded, leaf-littered yard zones
Prevention tips
- Keep grass mowed short and clear leaf litter
- Create a 3-ft mulch or gravel barrier between lawn and woods
- Use tick preventive on pets year-round
- Wear long pants tucked into socks in brushy areas
