Pest Profile
Bed Bugs
Travel hitchhikers that thrive in beds and couches.
Identification
Apple-seed-sized, reddish-brown, flat oval bodies. Nymphs are smaller and translucent. They do not jump or fly.
Behavior & habitat
Nocturnal feeders that hide in mattress seams, headboards, baseboards, and electrical outlets during the day. Hitchhike in luggage, used furniture, and clothing.
Health & property risks
Bites cause itchy welts, sleep loss, and significant psychological distress. They do not transmit disease, but infestations can spread rapidly through a home.
Signs of infestation
- • Linear or clustered bites on exposed skin overnight
- • Small dark spots (fecal stains) on sheets and mattress seams
- • Shed skins or live bugs in mattress folds, headboards, or nightstands
- • Sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations
Prevention tips
- Inspect hotel rooms before unpacking (check mattress seams)
- Keep luggage off the floor and bed when traveling
- Avoid bringing in used mattresses or upholstered furniture
- Encase mattresses and box springs in bed-bug-proof covers
