Pest Profile

Cockroaches

Filthy, fast, and shockingly persistent.

Identification

German roaches (small, light brown, two dark stripes behind head) infest kitchens. American roaches ("palmetto bugs," 1.5"+, reddish-brown) come in from sewers and outdoors.

Behavior & habitat

German roaches reproduce explosively — one female produces 30,000+ descendants per year. They hide in cracks during the day and forage at night near food, water, and warmth.

Health & property risks

Carry Salmonella, E. coli, and Staph; their droppings and shed skins are major asthma and allergy triggers, especially in children.

Signs of infestation

  • Live roaches scattering when lights flip on
  • Pepper-like droppings in drawers, cabinets, or on counters
  • Sweet, musty odor in heavily infested areas
  • Egg cases (oothecae) wedged in cracks

Prevention tips

  • Store food in sealed containers; clean grease and crumbs daily
  • Fix leaks under sinks and around appliances
  • Seal cracks around plumbing and pipe penetrations
  • Empty trash regularly and keep outdoor bins away from doors
