Flies

House flies, fruit flies, drain flies — different bugs, different fixes.

Identification

House flies (gray, 1/4"), fruit flies (tiny, tan with red eyes), drain flies (fuzzy, moth-like), and phorid flies (humpbacked) all require different treatments.

Behavior & habitat

House flies breed in decaying organic matter — garbage, manure, dead animals. Fruit flies breed in fermenting fruit and drains. Drain flies breed in the gelatinous film inside drains.

Health & property risks

House flies mechanically transmit E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella by landing on food after visiting filth. Phorid flies in commercial kitchens signal a serious sanitation breach.

Signs of infestation

  • Adult flies clustered around windows, lights, or trash
  • Maggots in trash bins or on dead animals
  • Tiny flies hovering near sink drains, mops, or fruit bowls

Prevention tips

  • Empty trash daily; rinse bins regularly
  • Refrigerate or discard ripe fruit promptly
  • Pour drain bio-treatment monthly to break down organic film
  • Repair torn window and door screens
