Termites

Silent destroyers that eat 24/7.

Identification

Pale cream, soft-bodied insects 1/8" – 1/4" long. Swarmers have equal-length wings and straight antennae (vs. ants' bent antennae).

Behavior & habitat

Subterranean termites build mud tubes from soil up to wood. Formosan termites, common in South Texas, form massive carton nests inside wall voids. Colonies can contain millions of insects and consume a foot of 2x4 in months.

Health & property risks

Termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage annually in the U.S. — and homeowner's insurance does not cover it. Damage compounds quickly and silently.

Signs of infestation

  • Mud tubes on foundation walls or piers
  • Hollow-sounding wood when tapped
  • Discarded wings near windows after a swarm (often spring)
  • Bubbling or warped paint that looks like water damage
  • Frass (sawdust-like droppings) near wood members

Prevention tips

  • Keep mulch and soil at least 4" below siding
  • Fix plumbing leaks and ensure good drainage away from foundation
  • Store firewood away from the house and off the ground
  • Schedule annual termite inspections
